What self-funded care means for you

You pay privately for your consultation, treatment and any additional care. The £350 consultation is separate from the injection, and the written quote confirms the recommended treatment and any additional imaging or physiotherapy before you decide.

Funding does not determine suitability. Some people prefer to continue through NHS pathways; others wish to explore a private specialist option. If Arthrosamid is unlikely to help your knee, we will explain the alternatives regardless of funding.

The care behind the price

The price is more than the hydrogel itself. It covers ultrasound-guided delivery, mandatory IV antibiotics, sterile preparation, the documented clinic injection protocol, six-week follow-up and access to advice during recovery. Professor Lee’s assessment is charged separately.

Published observational research informs the discussion, alongside your diagnosis and imaging. A two-year study follow-up is not a guarantee of benefit. Arthrosamid is a symptom-management option; it should not be presented as a guaranteed solution or a cheaper substitute for necessary surgery.

Pre-Consultation Checklist for Self-Funded Patients

Before booking an Arthrosamid® assessment, it may help to consider the following:

Your Knee & Symptoms

  • I have been diagnosed with knee osteoarthritis
  • My symptoms are ongoing despite conservative care
  • I understand this is not a cartilage regeneration treatment

Your Goals

  • I am aiming for improvement, not a guaranteed cure
  • I understand knee replacement may still be needed in the future
  • I am open to discussion of alternatives if Arthrosamid® is not suitable

Safety & Protocol

  • I understand Arthrosamid® is non-biodegradable
  • I understand infection, although uncommon, can be serious
  • I am comfortable with IV antibiotics as part of the protocol
  • I know I can ask the team to explain the treatment and antibiotic protocol

Funding

  • I understand Arthrosamid® is not routinely available through NHS pathways

  • I am prepared for treatment to be self-funded

If several of these points feel uncertain, a consultation is still appropriate — the aim is to clarify, not persuade.

Understanding NHS funding

Arthrosamid is not routinely included in NHS knee osteoarthritis pathways. Check your current local policy rather than assuming access. London Cartilage Clinic offers this treatment on a self-funded basis.

Public funding decisions consider evidence quality, comparative benefit, cost-effectiveness and commissioning priorities. Funding status alone does not decide whether a treatment is safe, effective or suitable for you. Your assessment should still cover risks, alternatives and realistic expectations.

Questions about payment

Is consultation included?

£350 consultation charged separately from treatment.

Can I ask about spreading payments?

Ask team what options are currently available before making plan, no promises.

When should I pay?

Confirm timing/instructions with clinic before procedure.

Is Arthrosamid available on the NHS?

Arthrosamid is not routinely funded through NHS knee osteoarthritis pathways. Local pathways can change, so ask the relevant NHS team about current options. London Cartilage Clinic delivers Arthrosamid privately at its Harley Street clinic.

Can I self-fund Arthrosamid?

Yes. Self-funded private treatment is the standard route at London Cartilage Clinic. Pricing uses the current central price tiers and includes the items specified in the treatment package. See the Arthrosamid cost guide for current prices.

Why is Arthrosamid not routinely NHS-funded?

Routine NHS funding is a commissioning decision and does not by itself prove that a treatment is effective, ineffective, safe or unsafe. Arthrosamid is not currently part of standard NHS knee osteoarthritis pathways; local policy and available alternatives should be checked with the relevant NHS team.

Can I pay monthly for Arthrosamid?

Most patients settle by bank transfer or card before the procedure. We can discuss finance options on request rather than promoting a specific finance partner. Ask our team during your free discovery call if monthly payment is a consideration for you.
